The TN Div. of Fire Prevention adopted the 2018 IRC with an effective date of 07/16/20. There is an undefined transition period for counties following the previous state code edition to update to the new edition. Counties which opt out and choose to adopt and enforce their own building code must use a code that is no older than 7 years from the most recently published edition. If their code is older than the 7 year cutoff, then the code adopted by the State (2018 IRC) applies. With the publication of the new 2021 IRC, this means TN counties adopting and enforcing their own code must use at least the 2015 IRC. Jurisdictions may opt out of the state building code by a 2/3 vote of the city or county’s legislative body. Jurisdictions may also choose to adopt and enforce a different code than the State code, but they cannot adopt and enforce a code older than 7 years compared to the most recently published version. If their code is older than the 7 year cutoff, then the State code (2018 IRC) applies. With the publication of the 2021 IRC, this means anything older than the 2015 IRC will trigger the State override.  (11/20/20)
