South Dakota does not mandate a statewide commercial building code. However, where no local building code has been adopted, the 2021 IBC applies to new non-residential construction. When adopting a local building code, jurisdictions must use 2021 IBC but may modify the code as they choose. Local jurisdictions which already have a building code can keep their current code. If you receive a gray color-coded finding for your search area, your community’s residential building code adoption status may not be available; however, you may contact your local government for the information. Please keep in mind that mobile homes and manufactured housing are not constructed using the residential building code reflected in this analysis, so this website is not applicable to those types of structures.
